British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several approach shafts down to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - imposed militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their courage," Healey said. "Including them were thousands of UK service members on duty over the festive period. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military conducted what it called a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in the country, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
