Weather Balloons Used to Illegally Transport Tobacco Products Closed Airport in Lithuania

Recovered contraband balloons
At least 11 of the weather balloons, carrying thousands of packs of illegal cigarettes, have now been retrieved

Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them entered the national airspace.

Aviation Problems

The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.

National Security Measures

Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.

Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.

A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.

Cross-Border Contraband Trend

Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."

So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.

Cross-Border Effects

Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.

Smuggling Techniques

Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."

Law Enforcement Objectives

Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."

Regional Security Context

The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.

Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
